Fetch
is a popular Macintosh FTP program created by Jim Matthews. Fetch is avaliable
free to people associated with educational or non-profit organizations.
Other users should buy an inexpensive license.
Installation &
configuration
- Print out these instructions or keep this page open
while you install the software.
- Download
the file Fetch_3.0.3.hqx.
- If you click on the above address, your browser should automatically
download and uncompress the file.
- You'll end up with two files, Fetch_3.0.3.hqx
(the original compressed file) and Fetch
3.0.3 Installer (the uncompressed file). Usually, they
will be saved to the Desktop. If not, use Find
to find them.
- Double-click on the Fetch 3.0.3
Installer.
- A window will come up with information about Fetch. Read it,
then click Continue.
- The next window asks you what version of Fetch you want to install,
standard or fat, and what components you want to install. We recommend
that you install the Fetch 3.0.3 Application
Only. Highlight your choice and hit the Install
button.
- Next, it will bring up a window asking you where you want to
install Fetch. Pick a place for it and press the Install
button.
- It will begin copying the program files and complete the installation.
- Configure the program.
- Double-click on the Fetch 3.0.3 icon to start the program.
- A New Connection... window opens.
- In the Host: box, enter
redwood.northcoast.com.

your Northcoast Internet username.
- In the Password: box, enter
your Northcoast Internet password.
- If you are uploading web pages, you can enter www
in the Directory box.
- Press Ok to connect.
- Once you are connected, it's a good idea to make a bookmark
for the connection, to keep you from having to type in all of
the above information each time you want to connect.
- In the menu bar, open File,
then chooose Save Bookmark...
- It will ask you where you want to save the bookmark and
what you want to call it. Usually, the default location and
name are fine.
- The next time you want to connect to the same location,
just double-click on the bookmark file you just made. It will
ask for your password, then it will connect you automatically.
Using Fetch
- Moving and deleting files.
- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Connect to Northcoast Internet using its shortcut, or enter
the information into Fetch again and select Ok.
- The Put File... button lets
you send files from your computer to the remote computer. This
is usually called uploading files.
- Highlight the file you want to upload and press the Put
File... button.
- It will bring up a window asking you to find the file you
want to upload.
- Highlight the file you want to upload and hit the Open
button.
- It will bring up a new window asking you what you want to
call the file on the remote computer. Normally, you can use
the default. It also asks you what Format
you want to use to transfer the file. For web pages, it's
important to upload web pages as
Text and images as Raw Data.
- Fetch supports drag-and-drop. Another way to upload files
is to drag the files you want to send into the Fetch window.
It will automatically upload the file to the remote computer.
- The Get File... button lets
you copy files from the remote directory to your computer. This
is called downloading files.
- Highlight the file in the Fetch window that you want to
download and press the Get File...
button.
- Fetch should automatically download the file. It normally
saves the downloaded file to the desktop. If not, you can
use the Macintosh Find command
to find it.
- You can also drag files out of the Fetch window and drop
them onto the desktop or into an open folder. Fetch will automatically
download the files to that location.
- You can delete files from the remote computer by highlighting
them, then selecting the Delete Directory
or File... option under the Remote
menu bar item. You can also drag the file you want to delete out
of the Fetch window and into the Trash.
- Changing and making directories.
- A drop-down box above Fetch's remote directory window lists
the directory you are currently in. You can change directories
by clicking on the drop-down box and choosing another directory
from the list. The directory list is also avaliable under the
Directories menu.
- You can also use the Change Directory...
selection under Directories on
the menu bar.
- Fetch will make directories on the remote computer. Select Create
New Directory... and give it a name. Your new directory
will appear as a subdirectory of whatever directory Fetch currently
has open.
