Installing an FTP program - Windows 3.1/95/98

WS_FTP Limited Edition is a Windows FTP program created by Ipswitch, Inc. It can be used to transfer web page files from your computer to a web server.

WS-FTP LE is avaliable free to non-commercial home users, students and faculty of educational institutions, and to U.S. federal, state, and local government employees. If you find the program useful, you can support the developers by purchasing WS_FTP Pro, which comes with additional features.

Installation & configuration

  1. Print out these instructions or keep this page open while you install the software.

  2. Download the file ws_ftple.exe.
    • The above link will take you to the WS_FTP LE registration and download page. Follow the instructions provided.
    • Usually, you want to save your downloaded files to a temporary directory. c:\temp\ is a common temporary directory location.

  3. Run the file ws_ftple.exe.
    • You can do this by either double-clicking on the file name or icon, or by using Window's Run command.
    • A box that states Install WS_FTP LE. will open. Click on the OK button.
    • It will ask you where you would like to extract the temporary installation files. Usually, it's best to select the default location. Leave the two checkboxes at the bottom of the window checked.
    • Click on the Unzip button. The installation program will automatically extract the installation files.
    • It will say that the files were unzipped successfully. Click on the OK button to continue.

  4. The installation program will run automatically.
    • It will ask you whether you want to install WS_FTP or uninstall it. Choose install and press continue.
    • A screen will come up with the licensing agreement. Click Accept.
    • It will ask you for a destination directory. Usually, it's best to accept the suggested one.
    • Now, it will ask you for a directory where it will store transferred files. Again, you can simply accept the default.
    • It will ask what version it should install. Windows 3.x users should check the top check box. Windows 95 users should pick the bottom-most one.
    • It will ask you for your email address. It should be something like "johndoe@northcoast.com".
    • It will ask you to pick a name for the Program Manager group. You can use the suggested one.
    • If all goes well, you will now get a Installation successful! message. Happy FTP'ing! Click on the OK button to finish.

  5. Configure the program.
    • The first time you use WS_FTP, you have to tell it what computer you want to connect to. The following instructions will set WS_FTP to connect to Northcoast Internet.
    • A window will open asking you to set the Session Properties.
    • Press the New button.
    • In the Profile Name: text box, enter Northcoast Internet.

      • It's usually the first part of your email address.
    • Put your Northcoast Internet password in the box that asks for your Password:.
      • Make sure it's typed in correctly. If you check the Save Password checkbox it will "remember" your password between sessions.
    • You can leave everything else alone.

Using WS_FTP LE

  1. Moving and deleting files.
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • If the Password box is empty, enter your Northcoast Internet password.
    • Click on the Ok button to connect.
    • The window on the left represents the download directory on your computer and the files in it.
The window on the right shows your home directory on Northcoast Internet's webserver, and its subdirectories and files.
    • You can send files from one computer to the other several ways.
      • To send a single file, you can simply double-click on it, and it will be copied into the other window.
      • You can also highlight files in one of the two directory windows by clicking on them once. There are two arrow buttons between the two directory windows. Press the button that points to the other directory window and WS_FTP will copy the highlighted files there.
      • To send a range of files at once, click on the first file, then hold down the Shift key and select the last file. It should highlight all the files in between. Send the files to the target directory with the correct arrow button.
      • To pick-and-choose multiple files to send, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the files you want to send. Click on the correct arrow button to send the files to the other computer.
    • It's important that text files are transferred as ASCII files, and images or programs as Binary files. You set this with the two buttons below the two directory windows. Checking the Auto box allows WS_FTP to decide this automatically.
    • To delete or rename files, highlight as above and hit the Delete or Rename buttons to the right of each window.

  2. Changing and making directories.
    • The path to the directory shown in each window is listed in a box above it.
    • Often, the files you want to send or recieve are in a different directory than the one in the window. You need to change directories to get to the wanted files.
      • To go up one directory, click on the small L-shaped arrow in the top of the directory window.
      • To go down one directory, click on the folder-shaped icon that represents it.
      • You can also change directories with the ChgDir button just to the right of each window.
    • You can also make a new directory on either computer to store files.
      • Hit the MkDir button, to the right of each window, to make a new directory. It will ask you what you want to call the new subdirectory.
    • Deleting directories is the same as deleting files. Directories have to be empty before you can delete them.
