How fast is my connection
anyway? This page gives Northcoast Internet subscribers an objective way
to test the speed of your connection to the Internet.
Below you will be provided with a link to a very large graphic file.
This file is 2.3 megabytes in size (that's approx 18,400,000 bits depending
the member's system).
If you:
- Do not have any Internet software (besides your web browser) open
- Do not check your e-mail during the test
- Have a perfectly working modem
- Encounter no errors during the download
- Are dialed up to Northcoast Internet, Inc.
Then:
You should see download times similar to the following:
| Connection Speed |
Download Time |
| 256 Kbps PeRKInet |
1 minute, 12 seconds |
| 56 Kbps (52Kbps) |
5 minutes, 54 seconds |
| 33.6 Kbps |
9 minutes, 5 seconds |
| 28.8 Kbps |
10 minutes, 40 seconds |
| 14.4 Kbps |
21 minutes, 18 seconds |
Do the test:
For two-button mouse users:
- Right-click on the following link: test file
- Select "Save Link (or Target) as..."
- Mark the time
- Click on Save
- Mark the time the download completes.
For one-button mouse users:
- Click and Hold Down on the following link: test
file
- Select "Save Link (or Target) as..."
- Mark the time
- Click on Save
- Mark the time the download completes.
About the benchmark:
The results listed above are not from the "real world." They are mathmatically
derived by dividing the total bits of the test file by the speed of
the download. Essentially, these would be the speeds you would get under
ideal conditions in a perfect world. They serve only as
a benchmark to test your connection.
The speeds at which you download are affected by many things. Your
modem could support compression, which would make the download faster.
Slight errors in the download would make it slower. In addition there
are literally hundreds of other small things that one must factor into
Internet transmission speeds.
