Research Projects

Pending approval of the Sarawak government, we'll be conducting four main research projects on the January 2000 expedition. Each of them are summarized below. Details of the people conducting the research can be found at the links in each description. There are also lessons covering the material that will be added as time goes by, and links to related areas of interest.

We want to find out how old the caves are in the Gunung Buda area. We'll do this looking at the tiny natural magnets buried in the dirt and mud of the cave floors. How do they tell you the age of the cave? Find out by orienting on down to Cave Dating Details Page! You'll also find out some amazing things about your own compass.

Heck. While we're there, we'd sure like to quit getting Mulu Foot. So would the people who live in the area. It hurts and makes it hard to walk. Not only that, you have to quit caving and sit around in camp with your feet up in the air. No one knows what it is, so our doctor is going to try to find out. Will he want to cut and scrape the sores, or just gently swab them? Find out by limping on over to the Mulu Foot Research Details Page. If you haven't seen the large picture of Dave's foot, click on the small photo above. Yuck.

Our 4th research project is to identify the organisms that live in the caves of Gunung Buda. We'll do that by collecting them as we see them, and by putting out small traps that we check later. Once you know what kinds of creatures live in an area, you can go back later and find out if changes in the area are affecting them. And if you find an organism that is brand spanking new to science, and you describe it scientifically, you get to name it. Maybe after your favorite science teacher? Yo' mama? That big hunk 'o man sitting back at home, pining away and wishing you weren't in Borneo? For more details, slide on down to the Cave Critters Research Page.
