The October 1998 issue of Mother Earth News.. and the March/April 2000 issue of Natural Home featured cover stories about cob houses. Cob is a very low cost, but labor intensive method, to create a natural home. Even though it is a lot of work, anyone can do it, and the actual process is peaceful, almost meditative.

These photos are of a cob house built by Misha and Elishiva Rauchwerger. They have had CONSIDERABLE problems because they did not get code or permit approval, and receently wrote a long article detailing all the facts and lessone learned in the COB WEB Newsletter. Spring 2004 edition. Call direct to CCC: 541-942-2005 to order a copy of this valuable edition. Learn from their mistakes before you build. Misha is a teacher and with Elishiva, his bride, built this house to be a non-toxic, and natural home due to her chemical sensitivity.

This home is now completed and is 2.5 hours east of San Francisco, at 2600 ft. in the foothills. A year round creek flows to a pond on the site, viewable from any part of the cob house. The property is 4.5 acres in Sonora county, 5 miles to town. This is an early permaculture site, with organic garden, fruit trees, irrigation system, PV solar electric system, private well water line connection, phone line, composting toilet, and gray water system.

The south facing cob cottage is a two storey, open floor plan with passive solar design.

Round timbers were used throughout with a curved 25' ridge pole, a metal roof is in place. The floor is poured adobe on level 1, and oak plank on level 2. A wood stove is sited for additional heat.

This is a beautiful, private area, with quiet natural beauty. This California gold country area is hot in the summer, and cold in the winter.
